Before Franz Wilhelm Seiwert (1894-1933) became one of the leading figures of the so-called "Gruppe progressiver Künstler" in Cologne (where he edited the magazine "a bis z" until 1933), he produced his first woodcuts entirely in the style of Expressionism, of which the present woodcut is a particularly striking example, even if it remained unknown to Bohnen (Franz W. Seiwert - Leben und Werk, Cologne 1978).
