(In the studio), 1898.
Colour woodcut from two plates on Japan paper. 13.1 x 15.5 cm (block), 13.6 x 15.8 cm (sheet). Inscribed "im ATELIER /85" in pencil in upper margin and signed and dated "Orlik 98" in pencil in the image. First state, before the edition in "Kleine Holzschnitte 1896-1899" (Verlag Neue Kunsthandlung, Berlin 1920). In contrast to the later edition, the colour plate of this proof was coloured by hand with a brush in the manner of a monotype. Orlik also refined the paper surface with mother-of-pearl dust ("mica") in the Japanese style. Thus unique. Our impression is reproduced in: Die Graphischen Künste, vol. XXV., 1902. Provenance: Estate of Marie von Gomperz (gift from the artist). Reference: Die Graphischen Künste, vol. XXV., 1902, pp. 31-34 (our copy reproduced there); Glöckner 2007-41/26, ill. p 47 (for the edition in "Kleine Holzschnitte")
