Lichtenstein returned to the theme of still life in his paintings and prints of the mid-1970s by exploring traditional composition and subject matter. In addition to using standard still life objects in these representations of his own works or those by other artists such as Matisse, Léger and Morris Louis. This print is from a series entitled 'Six Still Lifes' in which Lichtenstein presented a variety of still life types. Here the conventions of old master still life painting with a dish of fruit, a single lmon, and a curtain used as a framing device Ä are joined by a portrait of a woman who resembles Lichtenstein's own idealised beauties from the romance comics paintings of the 1960s.
