Woodcut on wove paper, signed in pencil. Provenance: Ex collection Gustav Schiefler.
According to Schiefler (who published the first catalogue raisonné of Kirchners prints) this woodblock was intended as illustration for "Zeichnungen von Ernst Ludwig Kirchner" by Will Grohmann (1925) but finally was not included in the work. Only 2 proofs are said to have survived.
The subject for "Mondnacht" was taken from the landscape format oil painting with the same title and from the same year, today in the collection of Städel Museum, Frankfurt/Main. See: https://sammlung.staedelmuseum.de/de/werk/mondnacht-handorgler-in-mondnacht
