With his "Homage to Utamaro" - works, Katz honors the master of Japanese woodblock color printing Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 - 1806), who inspired and influenced Katz. Utamaro's woodcuts are in the Ukiyo-e tradition, which means "pictures of the floating world" and represents every day life scenes. Both Katz and Japanese woodblock printing focus on the capturing of the moment.
