Historical Notes:
In this etching, the central detail - the accumulation of dice - is derived from the poster that Duchamp designed in Nice in 1925 for the Third French Chess Championship ( cat. no. 411 ). The upper and the lower figures are derived from the chess King and Queen that Duchamp designed for his Pocket Chess Set, 1943 ( cat no. 504). Here , the lovers - the King and Queen - are separated by chance ( the accumulation of dice).
